Life is about more than work, eat, sleep and work. Ryedale is a beautiful part of North Yorkshire with lots of places to go and things to see.
Libraries
A good place to start is your local library. There are libraries in Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton, Norton and Pickering. Libraries are run by North Yorkshire County Council and you can:
- borrow books, CDs and DVDs free of charge
- use computers for word processing, email and to search the internet
- find out what musical or arts events are taking place
- find out about local groups to join to share interests or hobbies
For opening times go to www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries or phone 0845 872 7374.
Tourist Information Centres
There are Tourist Information Centres in Helmsley, Malton, Pickering, and Sutton Bank. They can tell you about places to visit and where to go for a day out. For opening times go to:
www.ryedale.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/tourism_and_travel/
Leisure
You can visit www.ryedale.gov.uk for information about local leisure centres.
For local shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, look in ‘Yellow Pages’ or www.yell.com
Other sources of information are:
- the local newspapers, the ‘Gazette and Herald’ and the ‘Malton and Pickering Mercury’, both published weekly on Wednesday.
- BBC Radio York and Minster FM.
Shopping
The district of Ryedale has four market towns, all of which hold weekly markets where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, fish, flowers, clothes, toiletries and many other items. Market prices tend to be cheaper than supermarket prices.
Markets are held on the following days:
- Malton - Saturday
- Pickering – Monday
- Helmsley - Friday
- Kirkbymoorside - Wednesday
Malton has a Farmers Market on the last Saturday of every month.
Some of the market towns still operate half day closing, and some of the smaller shops and businesses may be closed on the following days:
- Malton – Thursday
- Kirkbymoorside – Thursday
In all towns and villages, some shops may not be open on a Sunday. Most larger supermarkets (Morrisons in Malton, Tesco in Thirsk, Co-op in Pickering) open on a Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
As well as commercial shops in the towns, most market towns have charity shops. These are shops which get their goods for sale from local people and where the income from sales supports a good cause, such as the local hospital, or a charity, such as Oxfam or Help the Aged. These shops are a good source of clothes, furniture and household goods and all goods are reasonably priced.

Ryedale Hate Incident Reporting Centres
Part of ‘feeling at home’ is knowing you are safe in the place you have chosen to live and work. No one should suffer because they have a different sexuality, race, or come from a different country. If you have been attacked, called names, or your property has been damaged because of your race, religion, sexuality, gender, disability or age, we want you to tell us. We understand that some people might feel uncomfortable about going to the police, so we have set up some other centres in the community where you can come and tell us privately what has happened to you.
These centres are called Hate Incident Reporting Centres and here is the full list:
